The Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society
www.wdcs.org
The global voice for the protection of whales, dolphins and their environment. Their objectives are to reduce, and ultimately, eliminate the continuing threats to cetaceans and their habitats. And to raise awareness of cetaceans and educate people about the need to address the continuing threats to their welfare and survival.
Orca Research Trust - (Registered New Zealand Charity number CC10041)
www.orcaresearch.org
The Orca Research Trust is a non-profit organisation which was founded by Dr Ingrid N. Visser, who has been studying the New Zealand orca since 1992. She remains the only person in New Zealand studying these top predators and her work has lead to major breakthroughs in our understanding of their hunting behaviour.
Visser discovered that the New Zealand orca specialise in hunting for elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) and her research has been featured in a number of documentaries which have aired around the world. Now her work has expanded to include the orca of Papua New Guinea and Antarctica, yet she continues to receive no government funding. You can adopt one of the orca she researches – she runs Adopt an Orca in association with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (see the profile above).
With a special permit from the Department of Conservation, Visser enters the water to observe the orca in their world. She has filmed and photographed the orca whilst they socialise and feed, resulting in images which have been published worldwide in magazines such as National Geographic, New Zealand Geographic and BBC Wildlife.
The Orca Research Trust is always interested in hearing from you if you see orca in New Zealand waters. They can be reached on 0800 SEE ORCA. Given that New Zealand orca travel between 100 – 150 km per day, please try and call as soon as you see the animals, to allow the researchers to locate them. Thank you for your support.
